Lucy Care has been involved in local politics since the early 1990s, when she was elected as the first Liberal Democrat councillor in Derby. In her 17 years as a local councillor, Care served as a cabinet member of the Derby City Council twice, with responsibilities for transport, planning and environment. Care additionally ran as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Derby North in 2010, coming third (behind Williamson and the Conservative candidate) with 28.03% of the vote and 2258 votes short of winning.
